Malèna: As poignant a film as I've seen. While, thankfully, I can't speak to the veracity of scenes like the bombing and the beating, I can say without hesitation that Renato (Giuseppe Sulfaro), and his director, Giuseppe Tornatore, nailed the unrequited love of an adolescent male. I know nothing of Italian customs, but I accepted everything this film had to say, no matter how horrible it seemed to my eyes, because it rang true. It was human. Terribly human.
